The Aurora Police Department is investigating a motorcycle versus vehicle fatal collision that occurred on February 18, 2012 at 5:10 PM. At 5:08 PM, Police Dispatch received a call of two motorcycles driving southbound on I 225 north of East Iliff Avenue. The caller stated that the motorcycles were driving recklessly and going about 75 miles per hour passing vehicles on the shoulder. That section of highway is a posted 55 mile per hour zone. Before officers could get to the area, dispatch started receiving calls of a motorcycle accident in the 13100 block of East Iliff Avenue.

When Officers arrived, they found a motorcycle down in the street. It was determined that two vehicles were stopped in the left and center westbound lanes of East Iliff Avenue while an adult and some children crossed the street. There were no vehicles in the right lane. Two motorcycles were westbound approaching the stopped vehicles. One of the motorcycles was able to negotiate around the vehicle on the left and it continued westbound without stopping. The other motorcycle struck the rear end of the vehicle that was in the center lane.

The motorcycle involved in the collision was a 2009 Black Suzuki GSX. The rider was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.  He was wearing a helmet.   His identification is not being released pending notification of family.

The vehicle that was struck is a 2005 Black Nissan Pathfinder. The driver and occupants of that vehicle were not injured, nor were the pedestrians that were crossing the street.

It appears that speed was a factor in this accident.  It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were factors. The Aurora Police Department is trying to identify the rider of the other motorcycle and urges him or her to contact Aurora Police.

Accident re-constructionists will review this accident to determine if any charges are appropriate.

Further information will be released when it becomes available.
